Rabbits and T-shirts

by Jack Email

I have had the intention of making some cool looking T-shirts for quite a while now. I tried Cafepress and overall wasn't hugely impressed. They do have a great website and they ship in nifty recycled Earth-friendly packaging. Sadly, the T-shirt I created and ordered wasn't one I found myself wanting to wear on a daily basis.

I have a couple more prospects, specifically Zazzle.com and Spreadshirt.com. If anyone has had any experiences with either, let me know!

Cool looking T-shirts need cool looking graphics, and if it wasn't already apparent from Jackrabbitscrewball.com's current logo, I'm not an artist. Thanks to Twitter and a fortuitous glance at a tweet from Newegg, I am the extremely happy owner of a Wacom Bamboo tablet. I could lavish praise on Wacom, because this is a beautiful pen-tablet system, and I could lavish praise on Ubuntu Linux, because it was plug in, start drawing - instantaneously. But I would rather just give you a glimpse of one of our new logos and let it speak for itself. I'm a rotten artist, but I drew this freehand using GIMP 2.6 on the Bamboo. I'm very happy with the results.

I suspect that there will finally be a cool looking Jackrabbitscrewball.com T-shirt soon!

Who's all here?

by Jack Email

Texas, Mexico, and Russia... Linux and cocktails are the hits here by far. I just wanna let y'all know we'll be working to revitalize the Cocktail of the Week. I know I've been hittin' the Linux pretty hard. What can I say... it's free, bourbon ain't.

Hello to Utah and North Carolina too by the way!

Our most popular cocktail so far has been the Pussycat! Check it out!

On the Linux side, it's the Pros and Cons. Worth the read even if you don't care who's controlling your computer.

Thanks for stopping by... I really mean it.

Using VirtualBox: Notes and Hints

by Jack Email

After using VirtualBox (version 3.0.12) for 3 months now, I've made some notes on things that fall into the 'good to know' category to make virtual computing easier.

1) Don't burn a CD for each operating system, the raw ISO file on your hard drive is just fine.
2) Installing guest additions makes the virtual machine's interface more responsive.
3) Setting up permanent shared folders makes working with files from one machine to another simple.
4) Backing up machines is as easy as copying the .VDI file.
5) Cloning a virtual machine to another physical machine is an easy way to copy your computing environment from a desktop to a laptop.

I know I bop around a lot content-wise here. People have asked me about some of the Cocktails of the Week that have scrolled off the page in particular. Put your minds at ease, everything you are looking for is still here.

Google and The Onion: the parody that isn't.

by Jack Email

Everyone knows Google - it's the verb we love, the internet search that's our ubiquitous friend. Google may have started out with a search engine but they are much more now. Google is a web browser (Chrome), an email client (Gmail), a messaging app (Talk), and voice chat (Voice). Google is an office suite that comprehensively manages your documents and calendar (Google Apps). Google is an operating system not just for your computer (Chrome), but for your cell phone (Android). Google is YouTube, Google Earth, and Google Maps.

Not only does Google have a picture of your house, they know your address, what you write and to whom, who you email and message with, what you store on your computer's hard drive (Google Desktop). They know what you do on your Android phone. They know what addresses you look up on Maps, and they know what photos you saved and look at with Picasa. This all seems great in the surface, but it would be wise to remember:

Google isn't in business to provide us with free stuff.
