Wiki of the Week! (aka Jack solves the Guantanamo Bay problem)

by Jack Email

There is a method to our madness here today. You see, we've talked about CIA black sites and enemy combatants previously. We know we have a huge problem right now regarding what to do with all these people we've imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay. Well Jackrabbitscrewball, as always, has a solution and you're gonna love it!

You'll just need to bear with me for a short stretch and then you'll agree this is pure genius.

Follow up:

Ferdinand Porsche. You may not know the name, but you know his work. He designed perhaps the most beautiful automobile ever created, the Porsche 356. Ferry Porsche, as he was called, was born into automobiles and worked to design and create them his entire life. His father, Ferdinand Porsche Sr. designed the Volkswagen Beetle. During World War II, the Porsche's designed tanks and kübelwagen for Hitler.

After the Allied victory, both Ferry Porsche and his father were arrested as war criminals and imprisoned (without trial) by the French. Ferry was released after his family in Germany came up with half a million francs. His father, however, remained in prison at Dijon for 20 months until Ferry was able to amass sufficient funds to buy his release. During his imprisonment, Porsche Sr. was forced to work on automobile designs for the French auto manufacturer Renault. Specifically, he worked on the design for the Renault 4CV. Now I know Alice is going to kill me, but I think we can all agree the Renault 4CV is a much better looking car than the Renault 4 which replaced it. Let's not mince words - the Porsche's could design cars.

But back to the point. Perhaps you can already see the glimmer of my idea here?

Why imprison people and go through all the work to amass sufficient evidence to try them for crimes they may or may not have committed? Why indeed, when you could imprison them as war criminals, set a ridiculously high "bail" which some might pay for their release. By setting a "bail" for release, you have an easy excuse why you still have people imprisoned - they are simply awaiting their families to cough up their ransom, I mean... bail. Reasonable accountability and good public spin are essential in handling "enemy combatants".

Furthermore, there is no reason not to put these "detainees" to work while we are awaiting bail payments. The world is suffering from a global recession. Does it make sense for taxpayers to support, house, and feed war criminals when they could be working on new designs for Fords and Chevys? Jackrabbit says "No! Put 'em to work!"

You never know, we just might have the next Porsche 356 soon.

So, anyway... to really read about Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche, you just need to click.
